WebP to PNG or JPG
WebP files from websites often need converting before an older editor, a form or a document will take them. Choose PNG to keep every pixel and any transparency, or JPG for a smaller file that opens everywhere. This tool reads WebP but cannot write it: the output is always PNG or JPG.
Transparency, quality and file size
- PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. A photo saved as PNG is usually larger than the WebP or JPEG it came from, because nothing is thrown away.
- JPG has no transparency: transparent areas are filled with white. Quality runs from 1 to 100; 80 to 90 keeps photographs looking the same at a fraction of the size, while text and sharp edges show blur sooner.
- Converting cannot restore detail. A small or heavily compressed image stays soft at any quality, and resizing up only makes the pixels bigger.
Whether the converted file is smaller or larger depends on the image and the formats, so both sizes are shown after conversion rather than promised in advance.
What conversion removes
The image is decoded and re-encoded on our API, so metadata does not survive: EXIF, GPS position, camera details and embedded colour profiles are all dropped. Most images look the same afterwards, but a photo tagged with a wide-gamut profile such as Display P3 can look slightly less saturated. Animated WebP files are not supported. Resizing keeps the aspect ratio and uses Catmull-Rom resampling.
Limits and privacy
Files up to 8 MiB and 8,192 pixels a side. The image is processed by Ironfang in the UK and not stored. Need an image from HTML rather than from a file? Use the HTML to image tool.
